Mrs. Patricia Olubumni Etteh, representing Ikire/Irewole Federal Constituency in Osun State, made history by becoming the first female Speaker of Nigeria's House of Representatives.
And, recognising the historic occasion, she pledged not to disappoint womanhood.

The new Speaker, whose election was unopposed, was the Deputy Whip of the House at the last dispensation. She pledged to use the position to quicken the delivery of "democracy dividends" by ensuring a smooth relationship between the House and other organs of government......

you know whats funny i was just reading about nigerian women in politics lately.. finding out that theres only ever been one female governor in naija since independence(in anambara state) in a country where more than half the population is female... this is deplorable... and i logged on here to find out about this lady.. i read the links.. and i cant believe some bastards dont believe a woman with a degree in law can Handle the position because she’s a WOMAN… wtf?!?! These people need to get out of that archaic state of mind.. it’s not leading the country anywhere… I guess gender equality in naija might be a long long way off…

I listened to her speech and thought that it was a good one. She chose her words well.

Definitely a step in the right direction. I only hope that she and the rest of the House live up to our expectations of her/them.

Good things are happening...I don't want to sound too excited so I won't spoil it for others, but obviously things like these r readily seen before I can mention them, esp. by Naijas out there, which is a good thing, I s'pose! :)

@ pink-satin yeah, I'm definitely interested...I'll check your page!

@ ONB yeah, nigerian women haven't really been given an opportunity in politics. Her name was Virginia Etiaba and her tenure lasted for about 3 months... na wah o! I know all this will change with time..it's certainly getting better everyday!

@ beiever, thanks... prayers are very necessary...

@ nilla..You're welcome! Good luck to her...

@ stuck in my throat, abi my sister! here's hoping that she does leave a legacy behind!

@ set..GIRL POWER!!!

@ diva-sta, no ther aren't but we're hoping that politics in Nigeria will not be partial towards women. This is certainly a plus for us women!

@ ijeoma... yeah...it's not exactly stated that we are not equal, but we are certainly treated as unequal to men... remember the episode 2 years ago of a male senator slapping his female colleague? I'm sure he wouldn't have tried it had she been a man!

@ april, she definitely chose her words well.. I hope she impesses while in office!

@ yosh..yeah, yeah, but go ahead be excited for us!!!

@ diamond hawk, yes o! e no easy o! Thanks for stopping by!

i'm all for it. at the end of the day, the only thing that should count is ABILITY.
our girls and women are so disadvantaged and put down at every turn. sometimes women get appointed as a token when some politician wants to pay lip-service to gender equality. our mothers sisters, girlfriends and wives are capable.
can't wait for women to run tins!

@ porter dehaquort... thanks for the vote of confidence! We can run tins o!
